Welding Fume – A Serious Threat to Health and Productivity

Welding fume is made up of a complex mix of particles and gases, some visible, many not. Even after the smoke has cleared, there may still be dangerous particles in the air. It’s a serious health hazard, and increasingly the industry is recognising the serious threat that welding fume poses. The International Association for Research on Cancer (IARC) classify welding fume as a group 1 carcinogenic substance – a known cause of cancer in humans. But unfortunately, welding fume is an unavoidable byproduct of the welding process, and so controlling the risk to workers is essential.

The Dangers – Immediate and Longer Term Risks

There are a number of health risks from welding fume, both immediate and longer term.

Respiratory problems are common, from breathlessness and asthma, to life threatening conditions like lung cancer and COPD. Metal fume fever, a debilitating flu-like illness, is another potential consequence. Welding fume can also irritate the eyes and skin, causing discomfort and potentially leading to various skin conditions. These immediate irritations, while often less severe than long-term illnesses, can still significantly impact a welder’s comfort and productivity.

Composition of Welding Fume

Welding fume contains a wide variety of hazardous substances including but not limited to:

  • Metals and Metal Oxides: Iron, manganese, nickel, chromium, zinc, copper, lead, cadmium, and aluminium.
  • Gases: Carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrogen fluoride.
  • Silicates
  • Fluorides
  • Other Substances: Fluxes, coatings (paint particles, galvanising), and contaminants (oil, grease).

The exact composition varies widely depending on the process and materials involved.

Regulations: Protecting Workers Health

Welding fume extraction regulations vary by country, but the core principle remains the same: protecting workers. Understanding the health and safety regulations in your area is crucial.

Key Principles of for Effective Welding Fume Control

  • Risk Assessment: Employers must conduct thorough risk assessments to identify welding fume hazards and determine necessary control measures. This may involve considering the welding process used, materials, and potential exposure levels.
  • Hierarchy of Controls: Most regulations prioritise elimination or substitution of hazardous processes or materials first. When those aren’t feasible, engineering controls like local exhaust ventilation (LEV), including fume extraction torches, are the next line of defence. Other controls, like limiting exposure time, and personal protective equipment, such as PAPR, are used as supplementary measures.  
  • Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV): LEV, such as on torch extraction, is often mandated for indoor welding. Regulations may specify performance standards for LEV systems, including capture efficiency and airflow rates. Again, it is important to understand the specific regulations for the country you are in.
  • Respiratory Protective Equipment: When LEV alone isn’t sufficient, or for outdoor welding jobs, respiratory protection such as PAPR is required. Regulations often specify the type of respirator needed based on the fume’s composition and concentration.  
  • Exposure Monitoring: Regular monitoring of welding fume levels is vital to ensure that the methods in place are working effectively and that workers exposure is minimised.
  • Training and Information: Workers must be trained on the hazards of welding fume, proper use of control measures, and the importance of PPE. Even for the quickest job, proper fume extraction is non-negotiable.

Productivity Benefits: More than Just Regulations

Beyond the health benefits, effective fume extraction and the resulting cleaner air can also significantly impact productivity.

When welders are constantly exposed to welding fumes, their focus can be compromised, leading to decreased concentration and potential errors. Dealing with eye irritation, coughing, and general discomfort disrupts the workflow and reduces efficiency. By minimising these distractions and providing workers with a safe environment, fume extraction allows welders to work more comfortably and consistently.This improved air quality translates to less downtime due to illness or discomfort, increased job satisfaction, and ultimately, a more productive and efficient operation for everyone involved.
